On Friday, October 16, Mrs. Taylor’s third grade class had the opportunity to experience the art of mummification as a part of their yearlong study of Egyptian history. The students adapted the process to mummify a rubber chicken. They first “washed” the chickens with red-wine vinegar, then began the “preservation” process by applying olive oil, spices, and salt. The mummification concluded with wrapping the chickens with linen. Prior to this portion of the project, all students decorated a sarcophagus (coffin) to house their mummified chicken. The sarcophaguses were judged by a few seventh graders and winners were selected.
